Please see pictures for cosmetic condition of the book and its cover.Beetles are the most diversified group of creatures on earth, accounting for nearly one quarter of all living species. They also include some of the most spectacularly beautiful forms, with a fantasy of shape and colors only equaled by butterflies and birds. The two latter groups are well-known to students of African animal life through a variety of excellent monographs and field guides. This book is the first to present a group of southern African beetles comprehensively and authoritatively to a non-specialist audience. At the same time it constitutes the first monograph of these beetles since 1907.
The book was designed to be useful on several levels. The complete layman will find that most, if not all species, can be identified by referring to the 164 meticulously executed, full-color illustrations, complemented by distribution maps and line drawings for every species. For taxonomist, museum curator and serious collector, the text also includes up-to-date synonymy, bibliography and whereabouts of type material as well as the first comprehensive keys to all taxa. Key references are pointed out to guide further study. The known biology of every species is recorded to make field studies on these beetles easier.
